What is Project Trust and why did I chose to do it?

To begin with I should probably explain what I am really doing on my gap year and who Project Trust (PT) is. Project Trust is a gap year organisation which selects, trains and sends out volunteers (such as myself) all around the world to undertake different projects. These projects include many things ranging from ICT teaching to teaching English as a second language (TESOL). PT aims to ensure that their volunteers make a positive contribution to the communities they work with and do not reduce the economic opportunities for local people. PT takes great care in selecting volunteers who are resilient and have a realistic approach to volunteering. I am going to be going to Cambodia for 8 months (okay okay yes it is not a whole year, PT allows you to do either 12 months or 8 months) While there I will be teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL).

You may be wondering why I have chosen to undertake this experience for my gap year. There are a combination of reasons and some of them are to do with what was occurring at the time. When I decided to volunteer I had just started Sixth Form. At that age there is lot of pressure to decide what you want to do in the future, essentially you are being told to carve yourself a narrow life path. One question asked was whether you want to take a gap year or not. My answer was unquestionably, "yes!". However, my answer for the next question of: "What will you do with your gap year?" was seemingly less certain. So naturally, I turned to the person who most people return to when faced with uncertainty - mum. This wonderful woman suggested PT to me. She told me to research it, which I did. After that the reasons why I thought I should do it started to pile up. So here are 7 reasons why:

1) My mum wants me to do it

2) I like to impress by doing the extreme

3) I want to live in a different country

4) I want to grow up

5) I want to meet new people

6) I want to challenge myself

7) I want to impact someone else's life in a positive way
